The three-day Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) Empowerment concluded at Changlimithang under the guidance of His Holiness the Je Khenpo, marking the completion of one of Bhutan’s most significant spiritual events. The empowerment offered deep teachings on the connection between an individual’s inner world and the universal world, emphasizing the Vajrayana belief that all beings possess an innate Buddha nature.

Throughout the event, devotees participated in rituals, prayers, and meditative practices designed to help cultivate inner transformation and strengthen understanding of the Vajrayana path. The teachings emphasized harmony between the microcosm of the individual and the macrocosm of the universe.

The conclusion of the empowerment coincided with the launch of the Guru App, a digital platform developed under the guidance of the Central Monastic Body and supported through the Economic Stimulus Programme. The app brings key teachings of Guru Rinpoche into a modern format, encouraging users to recite the Vajra Guru Mantra and explore the eight manifestations of Guru Rinpoche through interactive features.

With the final blessings and rituals completed, the closing of the Kalachakra Empowerment reaffirmed Bhutan’s enduring spiritual heritage and its evolving efforts to preserve sacred teachings while embracing new forms of expression.

ChotenDorji, Leytshog Dungchen, explained the deeper purpose of the Kalachakra teachings. He said, “The Kalachakra Tantra, or the Wheel of Time, is regarded as the king of all Vajrayana teachings. Bhutan has a rich heritage of Vajrayana culture, yet many of these profound practices have remained beyond the reach of international practitioners.”

He noted that under the vision of His Majesty, new efforts are being made to make Vajrayana teachings more accessible to a global audience. The Kalachakra Empowerment, held as part of this worldwide festival, carried a clear message: the Kalachakra was never meant to be hidden or kept secret. What truly matters, he emphasized, is receiving the teachings with mindfulness, the right intention, and a sincere commitment to uphold and practice them. When approached this way, the Kalachakra becomes open, meaningful, and deeply personal.

ChotenDorji added, “Even if one cannot fully practice all the principles, simply receiving the empowerment or even listening to its words awakens the spiritual potential within us. The Kalachakra helps transform dualistic thoughts into compassion, which then deepens into self-realization and expands outward to benefit the community.”

He said that when individuals transform, communities benefit, and this collective harmony ultimately contributes to global peace and happiness. The Kalachakra Empowerment, he concluded, is far more than a ritual; it is a journey of cleansing, purification, and realization, planting within each participant the seed of self-awareness and the aspiration for enlightenment for the welfare of all sentient beings.

Tashi Wangmo, who came from Zhemgang, shared, “I travelled from Zhemgang with the hope of receiving blessings and guidance, and these three days have been truly transformative for me. I wanted to be present in person because opportunities like the Kalachakra Empowerment are rare, and I felt a strong wish to deepen my understanding of the teachings. From the moment the empowerment began, I felt a sense of calm and openness that I had not experienced in a long time. I was delighted to witness His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, His Majesty the Fifth Druk Gyalpo, along with the royal families and Rinpoche’s from around the world gathered here, which made the event even more significant and inspiring.”

She said the three-day event helped her reconnect with her spiritual foundations, offering clarity, peace, and renewed devotion. The teachings on the relationship between one’s inner world and the universe reminded her of the importance of self-reflection and inner growth. She added that being part of the rituals and prayers strengthened her motivation to continue practicing with sincerity.

She added, “These teachings have given me a new perspective on my own spiritual path. Listening to the explanations on Buddha nature and witnessing the rituals helped me realize how much potential we all carry within. I feel encouraged to practice more regularly and to bring this sense of peace back to my home and community. This empowerment has been a blessing, and I will carry its lessons with me for a long time.”

Gabriel Chau from Hong Kong said, “We learned about this event and immediately felt that it was extremely precious. When I heard that more than 200 Rinpoche’s from around the world would be gathering here in Bhutan to celebrate His Majesty the King’s birthday, I felt truly moved. It is so rare to see such a gathering of great masters in one place, and I knew I could not miss this opportunity. For me, coming here feels like a blessing.”

He spoke with deep gratitude, explaining that the journey from Hong Kong to Bhutan was more than just travel, it was a meaningful spiritual pilgrimage. The convergence of highly revered Rinpoche’s, the grand royal celebration, and the sacred atmosphere of Bhutan created an experience that felt historic and deeply transformative.

He shared, “We also knew that the Kalachakra Empowerment would be held during this occasion. This empowerment is incredibly rare and valuable, and I understand just how profound it is. I have learned about the Kalachakra through my lineage, and receiving it directly from the Rinpoche’s is something I have always hoped for. That is why I came to receive the empowerment, to deepen my spiritual practice, and to be part of this sacred moment. I feel very fortunate to be here.”

Ugyen Dema, a student of Dechencholing Higher Secondary School, said, “I came to Changlimithang during the government holiday to receive the blessings of the Kalachakra Empowerment, joining devotees from Bhutan and around the world. I wanted to be part of this rare spiritual event and experience the teachings and rituals firsthand. Even though the stadium was fully packed, being here outside still allowed me to feel the sacred atmosphere and the collective devotion of everyone present.”

She added that the sheer scale of the event, with chants resonating from inside the stadium, created a profound sense of connection and spiritual energy. Listening to the teachings and voices of His Holiness the Je Khenpo, even from outside, brought a deep sense of peace and inspiration. The experience reminded them of the importance of inner reflection and devotion in daily life.

She further said, “Despite the large crowd and the fact that we could not be inside, I felt truly blessed to witness the empowerment. Hearing the chants, prayers, and teachings up close, even from a distance, was uplifting and left a lasting impression. This experience has strengthened my faith, and I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a sacred event. It was a moment I will remember for a long time, and it motivates me to continue my spiritual practice with sincerity and dedication.”
