Mahalal Rai, a native of Tsirang, has always carried with him the lessons of a rural upbringing, family support, and relentless hard work. Growing up in a loving middle-class family with seven siblings, he was surrounded by care, guidance, and encouragement. His parentsโ consistent attention to his health and well-being instilled in him the values of responsibility, resilience, and perseverance from an early age.
โHard work was never new to me, it was part of my childhood,โ Mahalal reflects.
Life in his village was demanding, yet it became the foundation for his character. From a young age, Mahalal worked in the fields, often carrying oranges over long distances, sometimes as far as 15 to 20 kilometers. These physically challenging tasks taught him patience, strength, and the understanding that nothing worth achieving comes without effort.
โI grew up working in the fields and carrying oranges 15 to 20 kilometers. Those experiences taught me hard work and resilience,โ he recalls.
These early experiences fueled Mahalalโs passion for fitness and bodybuilding. Determined to channel his energy and build strength, he recognized that his rural background could become his greatest advantage. With discipline and consistent effort, he committed himself to structured training, determined to achieve excellence in the sport.
In 2019, Mahalal reached a turning point. Watching others succeed in fitness and bodybuilding while he remained on the sidelines, he decided to step out of his comfort zone and dedicate himself fully to the journey. This marked the beginning of a transformative path toward personal and national recognition.
His early inspirations played a critical role in shaping his vision. Mahalal looks up to Mr. Bhutan Tshering Dorji and Mr. Sonam Dorji, whose confidence on stage and dedication in managing gyms demonstrated professionalism and perseverance. Support from friends and teammates, including Jamyang and Soman GaylayKhandu, provided further encouragement, helping him overcome challenges along the way.
Initially, Mahalalโs family expressed concern over his choice, wary of potential health risks, including injuries and tuberculosis. Nevertheless, his unwavering commitment to rigorous training, disciplined diet, and consistent routines gradually earned their trust. Over time, initial doubt transformed into pride and support.
To Mahalal, the title of Mr. Bhutan carries significance beyond physical achievement.
โMr. Bhutan is not just a title to me, it represents pride, strength, humility, and the spirit of Bhutan. It means not just winning a competition, but representing perseverance, nationalism, humility, discipline, and dedication,โ he explains.
This title reflects the values that define him and serves as a constant reminder to remain grounded while striving for personal and national excellence. It symbolizes his journey of growth, the spirit of competition, and the responsibility of being a role model in Bhutanโs fitness community.
Mahalal began competing in 2019, placing sixth in his first event. Each competition became a stepping stone toward success. In 2022, he secured second place in the Mr. Bhutan Menโs Physique category. By 2023, he claimed first place in the same category, establishing himself as a national contender. In 2024, Mahalal placed second in Mr. Bhutan, represented Bhutan at the World Championship in the Maldives, and won gold at the 15th South Asian Championship. After eight competitions, he finally earned the coveted Mr. Bhutan 2025 title.
Preparation for competitions requires meticulous attention to both diet and training. During the bulking phase, Mahalal follows a calorie-surplus diet to maximize muscle growth, experimenting with nutrition and monitoring visible gains. The cutting phase, however, demands mental toughness, as he transitions to a calorie deficit while maintaining high protein intake and low carbohydrates. Discipline remains central, with unhealthy foods sacrificed for success.
โDuring the cutting phase, itโs normal to feel like quitting. But I remind myself of my goal and why I started. Quitting isnโt an option because I believe in my potential and my hard work,โ he says.
Equally important is mental strength. Mahalal practices positive self-talk, visualization, and disciplined routines to maintain focus and resilience. The mental challenges of bodybuilding often go unseen, yet they test perseverance, self-doubt, and commitment behind the scenes.
Winning Mr. Bhutan 2025 brought immense gratitude and pride. Mahalal reflects on the years of training, guidance from mentors, support from friends, and unwavering belief from his family and wife. The achievement is both a personal milestone and a testament to discipline and dedication.
He emphasizes balancing success with humility. Discipline keeps him grounded, allowing him to celebrate achievements while remaining motivated for future goals.
Bodybuilding in Bhutan presents opportunities and challenges. Mahalal believes that with planning, community support, and dedication, it can become a sustainable pursuit. Sponsorships, networking, and promoting fitness as a lifestyle are vital to growing the sport. He acknowledges the support of his wife, sponsors, gym owner, community, and organizations such as the BOC and BBA, which provide platforms for aspiring athletes.
Injuries and setbacks are seen as opportunities to learn and grow. Mahalal views challenges as essential to resilience, maintaining consistency in training, diet, and mental discipline.
Beyond competitions, he emphasizes that true strength extends beyond the gym. Kindness, resilience, and personal growth remain central to his life. His upcoming goals include national and international competitions, such as the 16th South Asian Bodybuilding Championship and Mr. Bhutan 2025, scheduled from June 30 to July 5, 2025.
โI want to tell you, believe in yourself with all your heart, and never, ever give up on your dreams. Start your journey wisely, with a thorough health check-up and advice from a doctor. Supplements like protein and creatine are tools to support your hard work, not shortcuts. Discipline, perseverance, and sacrifice remain the foundation of success,โ he advises.
Mahalal Raiโs journey from a village boy carrying oranges to Mr. Bhutan 2025 is a testament to dedication, resilience, and the power of believing in oneself. His story inspires the youth of Bhutan to pursue their dreams with unwavering commitment and discipline.
