On September 27, 2025, with the successful launch of its first internationally certified Thimphu Marathon. The event drew around 2,000 runners, including over 155 international participants from countries such as Denmark, the USA, Singapore, India, China, and Japan. Athletes competed across the Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), and 10 km categories, while special events like the 5 km Green Run and the 2.5 km Memorial Run attracted local and family participants. The marathon passed through some of Thimphuโs most iconic landmarks, including Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point), Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong, Tango University of Buddhist Studies, and Cheri Monastery. In the Memorial Run, participants performed three rounds of worship at the Chorten to honor Bhutanโs kings. The 5 km Green Run promoted eco-awareness and encouraged runners to reflect on environmental stewardship while enjoying the scenic city route.
Winners received cash prizes and trophies, with recognition extended to five age groups ranging from 18 to 65+. Local and international athletes praised the smooth organization, challenging yet scenic course, and vibrant support from volunteers and spectators. Community members lined the streets, cheering runners and creating a lively atmosphere that highlighted Bhutanโs culture of hospitality and community spirit. The Thimphu Marathon, organized under the Run for Global Peace initiative, built on the success of the Bodh Gaya Marathon and aimed to promote athletic excellence, cultural unity, and mindful living. Despite being the inaugural edition without corporate sponsorship, the event received strong backing from Bhutanโs government agencies, tourism sector, and local communities. Organizers emphasized the marathonโs broader mission of promoting global peace through sports, sustainable tourism, and cultural preservation.
The event also strengthened Bhutanโs profile as an emerging destination for sports tourism, drawing attention from international marathon communities. Officials said the success of the marathon laid the groundwork for future editions and Bhutanโs ambition to host the AIMS World Congress 2028, which could bring global marathon enthusiasts to the Himalayas. Overall, the Thimphu Marathon not only tested the endurance of its participants but also celebrated Bhutanโs rich heritage, scenic landscapes, and commitment to peace and sustainability, leaving an enduring impression on athletes and spectators alike.
Kinley Choki, a participant for 42 km, said, โA lot of programs are happening slowly in Bhutan, many different kinds of events are being introduced. But I couldnโt see many female participants in this marathon. In fact, there were only two of us running the 42 km category and I managed to finish first. I tried to encourage more women to participate even if it is in the 5 km or 10 km race, it doesnโt matter. Whatโs important is our own health and well-being.โ
Her achievement not only highlighted the growing participation of Bhutanese women in sports but also reflected the unique atmosphere of the Thimphu Marathon, which blends fitness with cultural celebration.
She added, โFor todayโs program, I found it very unique. The route itself was special, and I think it coincides beautifully with the upcoming Tshechu festival. That made me enjoy it even more.โ
Atsuki Iwai, a representative from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), also took part in the marathon. He shared his experience, saying, โI am a Japanese staying in Paro, and I am really satisfied to have participated in the Thimphu Marathon. Starting from the beautiful Buddha Point and finishing in the heart of the city was an unforgettable experience.โ
He expressed his deep appreciation for the event, highlighting the unique blend of Bhutanโs natural beauty and cultural spirit that made the marathon memorable for him.
He added, โI am truly thankful to the organizers for making this event possible. It was well managed, and I feel grateful to be part of such a meaningful occasion in Bhutan.โ
Ajay Rana, a participant from India shared, โThis is my first international marathon, and I am really happy to participate in the Thimphu Marathon. My experience in Bhutan has been wonderful, itโs beautiful and very clean.โ
He shared his admiration for the local people, describing them as humble and kind, and expressed how welcoming the atmosphere made the event even more enjoyable.
He added, โI wish to participate in the next marathon as well. It has been an amazing experience that I will always remember.โ
Dechen Wangmo, a winner of 10 km Womenโs category said, โI participated in the 10-kilometer race and secured first place. Crossing the finish line today felt very special for me.โ
She explained that this marathon was a unique experience, as Bhutan has never hosted such an international-standard event before. She shared that it gave athletes like her a platform to showcase their talent and connect with runners from different places.
She added, โI have been regularly taking part in marathons, but this one was different. I am truly happy and proud that I got the opportunity to participate in my own country and even win. This moment will always inspire me to aim higher.โ
Yoshino Kiyoike, a participant from Japan said, โI have participated in the Thimphu Marathon and ran from Buddha Point all the way to Changlimthang. It has been my best experience in Bhutan.โ
He shared his excitement about the scenic route and the lively atmosphere, highlighting how the event allowed her to enjoy Bhutanโs beauty while taking part in a meaningful sports event.
He continued, โI am grateful for the organizers and everyone involved. This marathon will be a memory I will cherish forever.โ
Shweta Tiwari from India shared, โI heard about todayโs marathon just two days ago, and I also heard that Thimphu is a beautiful city. I got the opportunity to run here, so I participated in the 10-kilometre womenโs category. My experience of running has been wonderful.โ
She expressed her joy at being part of the event, noting how well it was organized and how the enthusiasm of the participants added to the overall energy of the day.
She concluded, โThe event was so well managed, and all the participants were very enthusiastic. I would also like to encourage women in my age category 30 and above to take part in marathons and other physical activities.โ
The Thimphu Marathon not only tested endurance but also celebrated culture, community, and the spirit of togetherness. With its scenic routes, international participation, and strong local enthusiasm, the event set a promising foundation for Bhutanโs future as a sports tourism destination.
