I would like to share my opinion in regard to the Bhutan Today article titled โ€œEmerging Trend of Individuals Returning from Middle East to Pursue Careers as Taxi Driversโ€ published on September 17.

The evolving Bhutanese perspective on employment is ushering in a transformative phase in our nation’s journey towards progress and development. This shift represents a growing awareness among our citizens that opportunities within our own borders not only offer promising career pathways but also provide a substantial means to contribute to our nation’s advancement.

In this ever-changing landscape, where self-sufficiency and financial stability are increasingly esteemed, the emergence of taxi driving emerges as a symbol of empowerment. It offers individuals a renewed sense of purpose and financial security. The combination of newfound financial stability and the flexibility offered by the taxi industry holds significant appeal for those seeking a well-rounded work-life balance. It is evident that a change in attitude can not only help retain our workforce but also actively involve it in endeavors that contribute to our nation-building efforts within our borders.

The stories of those who have embraced this new direction exemplify the profound impact of this emerging trend. For them, taxi driving transcends being just a means of transportation; it serves as a gateway to financial independence and personal fulfillment.

To fully harness the potential of this transformation, it is imperative for the government to play a pivotal role in providing support. Government initiatives aimed at facilitating entrepreneurship and self-employment across various industries will be instrumental in realizing the full potential of this shift in perspective.

Furthermore, the decline in passenger numbers within the taxi industry, often associated with individuals seeking employment opportunities abroad, can be addressed effectively if these individuals choose to stay and work within our country.

However, the implications of this transformation extend far beyond the taxi industry. It symbolizes a new era where Bhutanese citizens are increasingly inclined to explore and invest in opportunities within our nation’s borders. This shift has the potential to serve as a driving force for economic growth, job creation, and the strengthening of our national identity.

The resurgence of taxi driving in Bhutan serves as a rallying cry, urging us to reevaluate our approach to work, opportunity, and economic prosperity. It serves as a reminder that the potential for success and meaningful contributions to our nation’s development lies right here at home.

This shift in perspective symbolizes our collective readiness to embrace Bhutan’s untapped potential and build a future where our workforce actively participates in our nation’s progress. The government’s role in fostering an environment conducive to self-employment and entrepreneurship is pivotal. Through these collaborative efforts, we can ensure Bhutan’s sustainable growth and the realization of our vision of a “Developed Nation.”

The government’s involvement in reshaping the attitudes of Bhutanese citizens toward working abroad and encouraging them to explore opportunities within our own borders is of paramount importance. Here, we delve deeper into the strategies and policies that the government can implement to facilitate this transformation.

Firstly, the government can initiate comprehensive awareness campaigns to inform Bhutanese citizens about the array of opportunities available within the country. These campaigns can highlight success stories and showcase the financial and personal benefits of pursuing careers at home. By providing tangible examples of individuals who have thrived domestically, the government can inspire others to follow suit.

Secondly, the government should focus on creating a favorable environment for entrepreneurship and self-employment. This can be achieved through the provision of financial incentives, access to start-up capital, and the establishment of business incubators and support networks. By easing the path for aspiring entrepreneurs, the government can encourage more Bhutanese to take the leap into self-employment and create their businesses.

Thirdly, policies aimed at enhancing the ease of doing business and reducing bureaucratic red tape are crucial. Streamlining administrative procedures for setting up and operating businesses will not only attract more entrepreneurs but also help existing businesses thrive. This will contribute to economic growth and job creation.

Moreover, the government can collaborate with financial institutions to provide accessible financing options for those looking to start or expand their businesses. Access to affordable loans and grants can significantly lower the barriers to entrepreneurship and empower Bhutanese individuals to pursue their business ambitions.

Additionally, the government can work on improving the quality of vocational and technical education within the country. By aligning educational programs with the skills needed for emerging industries, the workforce can be better prepared to meet the demands of the domestic job market.

Furthermore, the government can establish partnerships with private sector entities to create internship and apprenticeship programs. These programs can provide practical experience and training for young Bhutanese, making them more attractive candidates for local job opportunities.

Lastly, the government can engage in diplomatic efforts to negotiate favorable bilateral agreements with countries that host Bhutanese workers. These agreements can ensure fair treatment, decent wages, and job security for Bhutanese citizens working abroad. By providing assurances of good working conditions, the government can mitigate the allure of overseas employment.

The transformation in Bhutanese attitudes towards employment presents a significant opportunity for our nation’s development. To leverage this shift effectively, the government must play a pivotal role by implementing policies and initiatives that promote entrepreneurship, provide access to financing, streamline business operations, and invest in education and training. By doing so, the government can inspire Bhutanese citizens to explore and invest in opportunities within our own borders, ultimately contributing to economic growth, job creation, and the realization of our vision of a “Developed Nation.”
