The Bhutan Higher Secondary Education Certificate (BHSEC) Class XII Examination 2025 results were declared on January 22, with 9,273 students from 81 higher secondary schools across the country appearing for the examinations. The results reflect strong academic performance nationwide, with Arts students registering notable outcomes alongside high achievers in Commerce, Science, and Language and Culture Studies.

In the Arts stream, the national toppers are Sonam Dorji with 85.75 percent and Thinley Wangmo with 85 percent from Karma Academy in Paro, and Rinchen Tshering with 83.5 percent from Ugyen Academy in Punakha. Commerce stream toppers include Trashey Pee Ongmo with 86.5 percent from Motithang Higher Secondary School in Thimphu, Karma Wangchuk with 85.75 percent from Kidheykhar Central School in Mongar, and Deepa Sapkota with 85.5 percent from Desi High School. The Science stream saw all three national toppers emerging from Ugyen Academy in Punakha, with Jigme Singye Tenzin scoring 93 percent, Sangay Choden Phuntsho securing 92.5 percent, and Kuenzang Tenzin achieving 91.75 percent.

In the Language and Culture Studies Certificate (LCSC) Class XII examinations, 200 candidates from Taktse Central School appeared, of whom 194 passed, resulting in a pass rate of 97.49 percent. The LCSC toppers are Kezang Choden with 92.25 percent, Tashi Lham with 92 percent, and Tshering Wangchuk Doya with 90.75 percent.

Arts stream topper Sonam Dorji said his academic journey was shaped by self awareness and determination, particularly as a repeater. He said, “There wasn’t a particular reason that inspired me to choose the Arts stream. From my early years of schooling, I realized I was stronger in theory subjects and consistently scored well in history and geography. This year, being a repeater, I knew I had to give my absolute best, so I stayed disciplined right from the start. Whenever I found myself getting distracted, I reminded myself of my parents back in the village, and that motivated me to stay focused and work harder.” 

Reflecting on the challenges he faced, Sonam Dorji said mathematics proved to be the most difficult subject for him. “Mathematics was the most challenging subject for me. Technical subjects have never been my strength, so I had to put in extra effort and stay persistent. I practiced regularly, sought help whenever I struggled, and approached problems step by step. It was difficult at times, but staying consistent and patient helped me gradually improve and succeed,” he added.

LCSC topper Kezang Choden attributed her achievement to consistent revision, practice, and effective time management. “To achieve the top score, I revised my lessons regularly, practiced writing and speaking, prepared short notes, and worked through past question papers while maintaining strict time management. Seeking help from teachers to clear doubts also helped me stay confident during the examinations,” she said.

She noted that literature was the most demanding component of the LCSC curriculum, requiring deeper understanding and critical analysis. Through repeated reading of texts, studying their background and themes, and engaging in discussions with teachers and classmates, she strengthened her analytical and writing skills over time.

“LCSC education has enhanced my communication skills, cultural awareness, and analytical thinking, which will be valuable in my higher studies. In the future, I hope to build on this foundation by applying strong language skills, ethical values, and cultural understanding in fields such as education, civil service, or any profession that values effective communication and respect for culture,” she added.

Science stream topper Jigme Singye Tenzin said his preparation involved drawing resources from multiple sources and maintaining a disciplined routine. “For the theory exams, I relied heavily on notes and guidebooks, not only from Ugyen Academy but also from other schools. I solved past papers from multiple schools and regularly consulted friends, teachers, seniors, peer tutors, and even ChatGPT whenever I had doubts. For the practical exams, I revised using YouTube lessons and spent time in the laboratory during recreation periods to ensure hands on practice,” he said.

He said that maintaining a consistent sleep schedule was one of his biggest challenges, as irregular sleep affected his concentration. By strictly following a disciplined routine throughout the year, he was able to overcome this difficulty and remain focused during both theory and practical examinations.

“Regular practice, careful planning, and staying consistent were key. I also made sure to balance study with rest and practical work, which helped me remain confident during the examinations. I aim to pursue fields like artificial intelligence, medicine, and software engineering. More than anything, I want to make my parents and family proud and contribute meaningfully to society through my work. The lessons I learned during this year, both academic and personal, will guide me in achieving my future goals,” he added.

Commerce stream topper Trashey Pee Ongmo said her interest in business subjects played a central role in shaping her preparation. “My study routine was strongly supported by my interest in Commerce subjects. I have been passionate about business since childhood, which made learning easier and more enjoyable. I followed a regular study routine and solved a variety of past papers to strengthen my understanding,” she said.

She highlighted the role of teachers in clarifying concepts and strengthening her application skills. “Whenever I faced difficulties, they helped clarify my doubts, ensuring that my theoretical concepts, especially definitions, were clear. Connecting topics to real life examples made it much easier to remember them during exams,” she added.

Looking ahead, she said she plans to continue her higher studies in the commerce field. “After BHSEC, I plan to continue my higher studies in the commerce field to deepen my knowledge. My goal is to build strong skills that will help me in my future career, and I hope to use this foundation to pursue opportunities in business and finance,” she further added.
