September 27, 2025, will mark a historic milestone for Bhutan with the launch of the inaugural Thimphu Marathon, the nationโ€™s first internationally certified marathon route under the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). Organized under the Run for Global Peace initiative, the event is expected to draw 2,000 runners, with 700 participants already registered, including more than 100 international athletes from countries such as Denmark, the USA, Singapore, India, China, and Japan.

The marathon is supported by the Bhutan Olympic Association. Organizers say the event will promote athletic performance while also emphasizing values of peace, sustainability, and cultural unity. They also highlight its potential to position Bhutan as an emerging destination for international sports tourism.

The certified course passes through several of Thimphuโ€™s prominent landmarks, including Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point), Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong, Tango University of Buddhist Studies, and Cheri Monastery. Special categories have been introduced to appeal to a wider range of participants, including the 5 km Green Run, aimed at promoting environmental awareness, and the 2.5 km Memorial Run, which incorporates three rounds of worship at the Memorial Chorten to honor Bhutanโ€™s kings. Athletes will compete in the Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), and 10 km categories. Winners across five age groups, ranging from 18 to 65+, will receive cash prizes and trophies.

The Thimphu Marathon forms part of the larger Run for Global Peace movement, led by the Bodh Gaya Marathon Committee in collaboration with the Thimphu Marathon Committee and the Borisu Sesang Foundation. The initiative builds on the success of the Bodh Gaya Marathon and is planned to expand to South Korea in May 2026. Looking ahead, Bhutan is preparing a bid to host the AIMS World Congress in 2028, which, if successful, would bring the global marathon community to the Himalayas.

Despite the absence of corporate sponsorship for its inaugural edition, the event is backed by government agencies, the tourism sector, and strong local participation. Organizers emphasize the marathonโ€™s broader mission, which includes promoting global peace through sports, supporting environmental stewardship, encouraging mindful living, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering sustainable tourism.

Sonam Phuntsho, chairman of the Thimphu Marathon Committee, said, “This marathon is not just a sporting event, it is a journey of respect, remembrance, and unity. By circling the Memorial Chorten three times, runners will honor the legacy of our kings while symbolizing Bhutanโ€™s timeless values of peace and compassion. With the support of our people and government, Bhutan is now proudly stepping onto the world marathon map.”

Navin Sinha, Race Director, Vice Chairman of the Thimphu Marathon, and chairman of the Bodhgaya International Marathon, added, “Through the theme Run for Global Peace, our mission is to bring young travelers and athletes to Bhutan. Most tourists today are above 50, but with this marathon we are opening the doors for global youth to experience Bhutanโ€™s culture, spirituality, and natural beauty. While we face challenges in sponsorship, we firmly believe this marathon will grow into a self-sustaining event that strengthens tourism and international friendship.”

The Bhutan Olympic Association noted, “The Thimphu Marathon represents a moment for Bhutanese sports. With the nationโ€™s first AIMS-certified route, Bhutan is now part of the international running community, opening pathways for future athletes and global recognition.”

By linking a world-class marathon with Bhutanโ€™s cultural and spiritual traditions, the Thimphu Marathon provides participants with a distinctive experience. Organizers stress that the event goes beyond physical performance to highlight mindfulness, respect, and reflection. While traversing the course, participants can engage with the countryโ€™s natural beauty and cultural landmarks. This approach allows the marathon to attract a younger international audience, boost tourism, and foster cross-cultural understanding.

The marathonโ€™s dual focus on sport and heritage aims to inspire both local and global communities. It offers an opportunity for participants to engage in healthy living while participating in a structured international sporting event. The integration of rituals, such as circling the Memorial Chorten, ensures that Bhutanโ€™s cultural and spiritual heritage is a central feature of the race.

As part of the Run for Global Peace series, the Thimphu Marathon is expected to strengthen Bhutanโ€™s presence in the international running circuit, stimulate economic growth through tourism and local business engagement, and motivate future generations to embrace sports, mindfulness, and global connectivity. Organizersโ€™ ambition to host the AIMS World Congress in 2028 reflects Bhutanโ€™s growing prominence in the global marathon community.

By combining athleticism, cultural preservation, and international engagement, the Thimphu Marathon establishes a foundation for a lasting legacy in Bhutanese sports and tourism. Participants from around the world can experience the countryโ€™s traditions, spirituality, and natural landscapes, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and global friendships. The eventโ€™s holistic approach emphasizes the nationโ€™s values of peace, harmony, and mindfulness alongside competitive sport.
