Sangay Thinleyโ€™s debut song โ€œHoenbi Soongkayโ€ has not only enthralled but also enamoured the hearts of young music enthusiasts, catapulting him to become the heartthrob of many. With his melodious tunes and dulcet pitch, he has captured the attention of listeners of all ages, resulting in a burgeoning fan base on various social media platforms.

His contemporary songs resonate with his audience, leaving them spellbound and eagerly anticipating his next release. Sangay Thinleyโ€™s musical prowess and captivating performances are a testament to his talent and dedication to his craft, making him a rising star in the music industry.

Q. Could you please share how you are currently allocating your time and energy?
A. I must say that my time and attention are currently occupied by my academic pursuits. As a college student, I am currently engaged in pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology at the esteemed Royal Thimphu College. Therefore, my days are primarily occupied with a myriad of academic responsibilities and obligations, ranging from lectures and seminars to research projects and assignments. As such, I find myself preoccupied with college-related activities, striving to excel in my studies and make the most of my academic opportunities.

Q. At what point in your life did you discover your passion for singing and commence your musical journey?
A. I commenced my singing endeavors quite some time ago, around seven to eight years in the past. In my younger years, I held a profound admiration for the sport of football and never imagined pursuing a career in music. However, as time progressed, my love for singing grew, and I found myself drawn to the creative and expressive nature of music. Despite my initial reservations, I ultimately embraced my passion for singing and began honing my skills through practice and dedication.

Q. Could you share with us on the title and details of your debut original composition?
A. In an official capacity, our release of โ€œHoenbi Soongkayโ€ occurred in 2018. However, it is important to note that the first composition I created was entitled โ€œNge Phama,โ€ which has yet to be released to the public. Nevertheless, I am pleased to share that we are currently in the process of finalizing its production and have plans to release it in the near future. Stay tuned for its highly anticipated debut.

Q. What is your first song hinged upon and what inspired you?
A. The essence of the song lies in the emotion of love. When I was in the process of penning the lyrics and composing the music, my focus was entirely on conveying my sentiments through the medium of music. Drawing inspiration from love stories, I channeled my creative energy into crafting a song that captured the essence of the powerful emotions associated with love. The end result was a heartfelt and sincere composition that I am proud to share with the world.

Q. We are curious to know if you have been playing the guitar since your initial foray into music, or if you acquired this skill at a later point in time?
A. In the year 2017, I embarked upon the journey of acquiring the skill of playing the guitar. Through dedicated practice and perseverance, I was able to cultivate my proficiency in this art form and hone my skills as a guitarist.

Q. Which song did you first begin to learn and master when you started playing the guitar?
A. The song that I began learning to play on the guitar is titled โ€œTharingsaโ€. It was my brother who recommended this particular composition, noting that the chords and melodies involved were relatively uncomplicated, making it an ideal choice for a beginner like myself. Therefore, I decided to start my guitar playing journey with โ€œTharingsa,โ€ and through practice and perseverance, I was able to master this composition with great satisfaction.

Q. Over the course of your musical career, how many songs have you written and recorded, either for personal or public consumption?
A. Over the course of our musical endeavors, we have had the opportunity to write a total of approximately ten original songs. At present, we have officially released eight of these compositions to the public, while the remaining two have yet to be unveiled to our listeners. Despite this fact, we are enthusiastic about the prospects of sharing these two unreleased songs in the future, and we eagerly anticipate the response of our fans when the time comes to do so.

Q. When it comes to songwriting, which of your compositions required the greatest amount of time and effort to create, and which one was the most expedient to complete?
A. It took me nearly a year to complete the song โ€œSho Pelaโ€ due to my lack of focus and discipline. Although I had started working on the composition, I found myself taking prolonged breaks in between writing sessions, which often led me to lose track of the songโ€™s overall direction. Consequently, the process of writing โ€œSho Pelaโ€ became much more prolonged and protracted than I had initially anticipated.
On the other hand, โ€œGagi Labmoโ€ was one of the fastest songs I ever wrote, and it was produced on an extremely tight schedule. The producer tasked me with creating the song within just two days, which was a significant challenge given the limited timeframe. Nevertheless, I was able to focus my creative energy and inspiration and successfully create a cohesive, original composition in record time. In fact, I was able to sell the rights to this song after it was completed.

Q. Do you have any of your favorite or memorable performances?
A. It was during the 115th National Day. Performing in front of my king and a huge crowd was a memorable moment for me. And my favorite tour will be the one I had performed in Phuntsholing, it was exciting and enjoyable.

Q. Do you think our Bhutanese music is evolving?
A. Yes, because now we have traditional instruments blended with modern gadgets. Such instruments make Bhutanese music creative and unique. Which I feel is pretty much attuned to trends of the younger generation and music around the world. However, with the essence of our traditional and cultural fiber that stands out from music from others (rest of the world).
